Death Valley Hardpan

In the lowest parts of the dunes are areas of cracked mud flat this is the ancient basis of the formation.

The mud has a strong cracked and caked texture with a rich yellow patina. This underlayment has been further eroded and polished by the motion of the sand and tourists.

I was definitely enthusiastic about the texture and looked at several spots before I picked this one. Shortly after the sun had set I shot some of it in the soft light of twilight...

This is an extremely high resolution image, every grain of sand is tack sharp!

The free desktop shows a little bit of the detail present in the original as a background for the vertorama.

This is a 110 megapixel image made from a number of frames of data from a Canon 5D Mark II.
