High Sierra Panoramas and Vertoramas

All of the images in this gallery are made by taking a series of exposures and the combining them in the computer to create a wide field rendition of our world.

The rpocess does this with very minimal distortion and with, in many cases, infinet depth of field...

How to Work The Gallery...

Rainbow Falls

Walking out to the Devils Postpile formation takes you about half the way to Rainbow Falls.

This is a fairly raging 100 foot waterfall in the middle of an area where a superfire took place. The fire was in the mid 90's and very little has grown back. Apparently the fire changed the soil chemistry so that it won't support the native plant communities...

This is shot from the overlook before the trail winds down to the bottom...

Mono Lake Glass

This was a totally still day which is fairly rare...

The highway here sports high wind warning signs for a reason.

The water was dotted with alkaline flies and seagulls. The gulls eat the flies and brine shrimp which grow in the lake.

I enjoy the disparate white balances in this picture, the blue of the shadows versus the warmth of the setting sun. The reflection provides a nice ground of positive-negative space imaging for the tufa rocks in the foreground.

This is a 52 megapixel image made from a number of frames of Canon 5D Mark II data.

Mono Lake Sunset

this was one of those real WOW moments.

We had been battered by rain and hail all afternoon and had gone back to camp to get dry garments then right back out again...

And based on this not a moment too soon because this is what was going on when we piled out of the vehicles at the South Tufa area...

Good. All good!

North Peak Ridgeline

The last rays of light were really spectacular creating this backlighted vista in the shadow of North Peak. This effect was mercurial and only lasted for 5-10 minutes.

Right after I finished shooting this 28 frame sequence the light went out of the valley like someone turned a switch...

This is part of the fun of photographing in the mountians because the light is constantly changing and during the golden hours it is very dramatic.

This is a 165 megapixel image made from a number of frames of Canon 5D Mark II data.
