High Sierra Panoramas and Vertoramas

All of the images in this gallery are made by taking a series of exposures and the combining them in the computer to create a wide field rendition of our world.

The rpocess does this with very minimal distortion and with, in many cases, infinet depth of field...

Dardanelles Buttes Sunset

This is a view to the east from the edge of the Donnell Overlook of some of the buttes that are in the Dardanelles area.

The sunset provides an incisive light that pops the terrain out in graphic relief against the clouds.

This is a very narrow piece so the longer sizes are more inexpensive.

Lower Yosemite Falls

We came down into the valley for a day after a long week in the high country.

The air at the higher elevations was crystal clear, unfortunately not so for the valley floor. The Forest Service was conducting a controlled burn and the smoke was so thinck you couldnt see Half Dome from the Sentinal bridge.

We climbed up into the mist zone at Lower Yosemite Falls and the air was fine so I stayed for a whle. I had never make wide field photos of this falls so it was a whole new experience!

One of the things about Yosemite is wishing for a lens that is just a little bit wider. This ceases to be an issue with Vertoramas.

Zabriski Point

This whole area of Death Valley is a strange varigated landscape. It looks like a earth forms parts box was randomly dumped and these patchwork hills fell out.

Oh, and did I mention the heat ? We had our rain umbrellas so at least there was a spot of shade to work under.

The colors of the different rock strata and the lush textures of the rocks here are very compelling.

This is a 80 megapixel image made from a number of frames of Canon 5D Mark II data.

Upper Yosemite Falls

March 04 - 2009

I took some of my photo students for a quick trip to Yosemite and we had a wonderful time.

Since we were not there for long we hit the easy marks and came away with some nice pictures.

Because I have been seeing things in a very vertical vein for the past while the treatment of this scene was obvious.

Vertorama!

I have this scene in all the different seasons as it is an easy shot to get to and in a way the winter version has a subtlity that the flashy green of spring and summer lacks.

I think it draws you more towards the waterfall and its reflection with out the confusion of a bunch of high chroma colors flying around.

This is a 39 megapixel image made from a number of frames of Nikon D200 data.
