California High Sierra

I have spent some time floating around in the sierra with both film and digital cameras. This gallery has some of the results that are normal rectangles.

Currently I have given only a single purchase option, if you are interested in another size give me a call at 510-742-0548 and I will be happy to help :)

Iceberg Lake

Iceberg Lake is a brilliant aquamarine tarn filled with glacial run off from the upper slopes of Mount Ritter.

It is a stiff climb up above the tree line from Lake Ediza in the Ansel Adams wilderness area.

The lake is surrounded on three sides by sheer glacial walls that feed its near freezing waters. It is in the alpine region so the surrounding landscape is a glacial moraine.

This photograph was taken on Kodak VPS 160 film with a 127mm lens using a Mamiya RB67 camera.

Vernal Falls Winter

I had arrived in Yosemite the prior evening after dusk and stayed in a luxurious tent cabin. I awoke at dawn to the most resounding silence. It had snowed during the night and it was continuing to snow...

I walked with my friends up the incredibly steep trail to Vernal Falls. At the base of the falls the mist staircase was impassably frozen so we stopped and waited for the snow to clear.

After sitting on a mist drenched rock with the darkcloth over my camera for a while the snow cleared momentarily and I captured this image.

This is a color image in which stark monochrome tonality of the falls is contrasted with a small patch of blue sky and green moss on the rocks.

This photograph was taken on Kodak VPS 160 using a 6x9 roll film holder with a 150mm Schneider lens using a Toyo 4x5 view camera.

Yosemite Meadow

Early morning in Yosemite Valley is a time when the landscape comes alive with the first light of day.

The acute angle of the light trans-illuminates the valley floor and makes the meadows come alive with color, form and texture.

I photographed this tree and then sat under it and enjoyed the first warmth of the morning sun.

The small 35mm film format creates a very painterly feeling.

This photograph was taken on Kodak VPS 160 film with a 50mm lens using a Pentax 35mm camera.

Little Matterhorn Falls

The Trinity Alps is a group of mountains near Redding California. I took a weekend hike there starting at a relatively low altitude.

The trail wound through lush pine forests and across small streams before it began to climb into the higher country.

I was carrying an older metal 4x5 view camera, metal tripod and a pack full of film holders as well as my camping gear.

They were, well... rather heavy.

I found that the work was very worthwhile as I emerged from the forest cover into the high country. This is one of the waterfalls on the creek that I followed to the lakes up on top.

This photograph was taken on Kodak 4x5 Super-XX with a 150mm Schneider lens using a Graphic View II camera.

I have on sale a limited edition 24x31 gallery deep wrapped print on canvas for $350.00 in my in-stock gallery.
