California High Sierra

I have spent some time floating around in the sierra with both film and digital cameras. This gallery has some of the results that are normal rectangles.

Currently I have given only a single purchase option, if you are interested in another size give me a call at 510-742-0548 and I will be happy to help :)

North Peak Sunrise

This was a totally windswept morning where I was wishing for a stocking cap because my brimmed hats would not stay on properly.

Between each set of gusts would be a still period where the the wind would come around to a totally different direction.

I found this incredible bunch of red paintbrush growing by a occasional watercourse and it was all good!

I got in a sequence of exposures while the wind was still.

I shoot at 1/10-1/15th at f22 with a P1 at ISO 100. Because of the low shutter speed I try to be careful that the camera does not get buffeted by the wind. In this case the wind stopped and was calm for a few seconds.

This is a 40 megapixel image made from a number of frames of Canon 5D Mark II data.

North Peak Dawn

The was the dawn after a rattling wind swept night one of those nights where you are really glad when the sun comes up and its over... What is it with these winds anyway ?

I got up and started taking pictures between these awesome gusts of wind that wanted to topple the camera. There were some lulls between the gusts so I could shoot without getting too buffeted by thhe wind. I got some pictures of the dawns first light and the wind swept clouds.

Path to Conness Lakes

I wanted to get closer to the Mt Conness ridgeline as it becomes brightly illuminated by the late afternoon sun.

The path was not really a path but in the final evaluation we really don't care. We know which way we want to go so the main part of the exercise is putting one foot in front of the other. The cliff was littered with cairns from other travelers but we went for the direct route as usual and gained the Conness Lakes basin fairly rapidly.

Up top we got some amazing shots but this image shows that getting there is half the fun!

North Peak Ridgeline

We went up to the higher part of the Conness basin and were able to see where a few brave climbers went on up across the tallis and into some cols that lead to the ridge then the summit of Conness.

We were in the high 10's and the back face of North Peak rose up over us like a jagged wall...

Just looking at it makes me feel out of breath :)
